From late March through to October, once a week is the sweet spot for most Glasgow gardens, dropping to every 10–14 days in the slower months. In a warm, wet spell you may need to mow twice a week just to keep pace with the growth.
The golden rule is to never remove more than one third of the grass height in a single cut. Scalping the lawn stresses the plant, weakens the roots and hands an open invitation to moss and weeds. Keep your blade height around 25–40mm, raise it slightly in dry spells to shade the soil, and make sure the blades are sharp — a blunt mower tears the grass and leaves brown, frayed tips.
Moss is the number one complaint we hear across Glasgow, and it is rarely the real problem — it is a symptom. Moss moves in where grass is struggling, and our climate gives it everything it wants: high rainfall, heavy clay soil, shade from walls and trees, poor drainage and compacted ground.
Killing the moss with a treatment only clears the space temporarily. To keep it out for good you need to fix the cause: scarify to pull out the dead moss and thatch, aerate to open up compacted soil and improve drainage, raise your mowing height so the grass can outcompete it, cut back overhanging branches to let light in, and feed the lawn so the grass thickens up. A dense, well fed lawn crowds moss out naturally.
Most lawns do best on two to three feeds a year. Apply a high nitrogen spring and summer feed from around April to encourage strong green growth, then switch to an autumn feed in September or October — this one is lower in nitrogen and higher in potassium and phosphorus, which toughens the grass up for winter rather than pushing soft growth that frost will damage.
Always apply feed to a damp lawn on a still day, spread it evenly (a spreader beats hand scattering every time), and water it in if rain is not forecast within a couple of days. Over feeding or uneven application scorches the grass and leaves stripes you will be looking at for months.
Most of the year, no — Glasgow’s rainfall does the job for you. But during a dry summer spell an established lawn still needs roughly 25mm of water a week to stay green and healthy.
When you do water, water deeply and infrequently. One long soak once or twice a week encourages roots to grow down in search of moisture, which makes the lawn far more drought resistant. Little and often does the opposite — it produces shallow, lazy roots. Water early in the morning so the grass dries through the day, as watering in the evening leaves it damp overnight and invites fungal disease. And do not panic if the lawn browns off in a heatwave; it is usually dormant, not dead, and will bounce back with the next decent rain.
These two jobs make more difference to a tired lawn than anything else, and most Glasgow lawns benefit from both.
Scarifying rakes out the layer of dead moss, thatch and debris sitting between the grass and the soil. Left alone, that layer blocks water, air and nutrients from reaching the roots. Aerating punches holes into the soil to relieve compaction, letting the ground breathe and drain properly — a must on the heavy clay soils common around the west of Scotland.
Autumn is the ideal window for both, with spring a decent second choice. If your lawn feels spongy underfoot, puddles after rain, or is more moss than grass, it is telling you it is overdue.
Early autumn is the best time to patch a lawn, when the soil is still warm and the rain is reliable — mid spring works well too. Start by raking out the dead grass and moss and loosening the top few centimetres of soil so the new seed has something to root into.
Scatter a quality grass seed suited to the conditions — a hard wearing ryegrass mix for family lawns and play areas, a shade tolerant mix under trees — then cover lightly with topsoil or compost and firm it down gently. Keep the area damp until the seed germinates, usually 7 to 21 days, and stay off it until the new grass has had its first couple of cuts.
If the same patch keeps failing, something underneath is causing it: compaction, poor drainage, deep shade or pet damage. Fix the cause or you will be reseeding it every year.
